Illness

Poem: Sadness, stillness in the room. In the middle, a table and a bed. In the bed, a feverish boy. His mother sits next to him with a little book. She reads him his favorite story and immediately, the fever subsides.

The Shade Of The Moon

3/12/18

The Shade of The Moon is by Susan Beth Pfeffer, and is a fiction genre book.

This book is about the moon getting out of orbit due to an asteroid and causing apocalyptic events such as tornadoes, tsunamis, blizzards, and even erupting volcanoes. This then leads to Jon, the main character, having to live with his family in Sexton University. My favorite part of this book is the middle of the story. This is because it has so many details about what’s going on and a lot of interesting things happen.

The main character of this book is a very hardworking person. The quote that proves this says, “Jon had never been that close to death. The others had given their food to him. He’d been hungry, and he’d been tired from the endless labor of chopping firewood, but they’d see to it that he would survive” (Page 34). This quote means that Jon has been working hard and has earned food from doing so.

The reason I liked this book was because of how interesting it was and it was very different from the other books of the series. I would recommend this book to a friend because I think they would enjoy the suspense that builds up throughout the story. The theme of this book is to take what you have for granted because it might go away.

Book blog: The world we live in

2/12/18

The title of this book is The World We Live In and the author is Susan Beth Pfeffer. The genre of this book is fiction and is a continuation of the book Life As We Knew It.

The world we live in is about a girl named Miranda who lives with her mom and two other brothers, John and Matt. One day, an asteroid is said to hit the moon and not have much of an effect. But once this happens, apocalyptic events such as tsunamis, erupting volcanoes, flu outbreaks, and much more, cause a lot of problems as people try to survive. My favorite part of this book is the beginning because it shows what happened after Life As We Knew It.

The main character of this book is a very pessimistic person. The quote that proves this says, “Finally, though, we knew we it was nighttime and Mr.Danworth wasn’t coming.” This shows that Miranda is a pessimistic person due to the fact that she doesn’t think Mr.Danworth is coming.

I liked this book because it let me know all about what happened in the book before (Life As We Knew It). It even led to new characters being added into the story. I would recommend this book to someone if they read the book before this one to get a better understanding of whats going on. Lastly the theme of this book is to take what you have for granted because you never know when it will go away.

One word

My one word for 2018 will be focus. I chose this word because of how much it can affect me throughout life. This word means that I’m going to focus on things I do such as school work or anything else that I’m doing. Living this word will change my life because of the outcome. The outcome can be very helpful by getting me through lots of things both academically and throughout life itself. The steps I will take for this word will be to start focusing on what I do in school and outside of school. This would mean that I would finish my assignments and spend time with my family.

Life As We Knew It

1/11/18

Life As We Knew It is a book by Susan Beth Pfeffer, and is a non fiction genre.

Life As We Knew It is about a 17 year old girl named Miranda who lives with her divorced mom and two brothers. One day, astronomers found out that an asteroid was going to hit the moon and cause nothing. Once this happened, the world went to complete chaos with natural distasters, stores being overrun by people, and with gas stations having lines of cars waiting for gas. My favorite part of this book is the ending because of how interesting it is and makes you wonder what’s going to happen next.

The main character of this book (Miranda) is a dramatic person. I know this because of the dramatic arguments she has with her mom. This text from the book proves this and says, “Mom yelled at me about money and responsibilities and I yelled at her abou favorites and not loving me like she loves Matt and Jonny ...” (page 8). This quote means that Miranda is a dramatic person because of the argument(s) she’s had with her mom.

I really liked this book because of how you were able to see what happened in a different persons point of view since this book is part of a series. I would recommend this book because of how interesting it is because of the plot. The main theme of this book is to take what you have for granted because something might happen and ruin it for you.

The Perfect Christmas

The perfect Christmas would be a snowy day, and waking up to the smell of chorizo and scrambled eggs. Then opening gifts with the entire family and seeing my niece rush to her gift and tear it open to  the point where you cant even see the wrapping paper anymore. After that, I would lay down on the couch and watch all of the Home Alone movies and think how it’s not realistic. From there, I would sleep for the rest of the day or just be extremely lazy.

Book Blog: Astronomy Book

12/15/17
Destination Space is a picture book by a man named Seymour Simon. The genre of this book is non fiction because the pictures that are shown are real.

This book is about the pictures of stars, nebulae, other galaxies, planets, and other magnificent pictures of our universe. These pictures were taken by the Hubble Telescope, and have a lot of detail. My favorite part of this book is the picture of a cluster of stars named 47 Tucanae because of how it resembles Christmas lights.

If I were to describe this books pictures and information , it would be interesting. The reason to this is because of how clear you can see the images and the information that is given to help you understand the picture. This can be shown in page 5 and says “... but it’s really part of a star cluster called 47 Tucanae, about fifteen thousand light years from Earth.” This information is intersection because it talks about a star cluster and how far it is.

I really liked this book because of how interesting the information and pictures are. But the main reason I didn’t like this book is because there could have been some more pictures of certain things in our universe such as supernovas. I would recommend this to people who are mostly into astronomy and want to learn more about the things in our universe. Overall, the thing that the author wants you to understand is that there are lots of things in our universe with interesting information.

Show and tell: My Pocket Watch

My show and tell item is a pocket watch. I got it from my grandpa a few years ago on thanksgiving, and I was the one person to obtain it out of all my cousins that were there. This item means a lot to me because I barley ever get to see my grandpa, but the pocket watch helps me remind myself of him. When I do get to see him, I bring the watch with me so he knows that I haven’t broken it yet (because that’s what he’d expect from me).

Book Talk: the dead & the gone

The Dead and the Gone is by Susan Beth  Pfeffer and is a non-fiction genre.  The plot of the book is about a 17 year old boy named Alex and lives with his two sisters, Julie and Brianna. One day, it has been rumored that an asteroid is supposed to hit the moon and is supposed to have a neutral outcome. The astroid hits the moon out of its orbit and causes chaotic events such as tsunamis, volcanoes, and other apocalyptic events. This does not end up well for Alex and his two sisters as they don’t have their parents with them and now they have to deal with what just happened.

Alex is a very protective person when it comes to his sister Julie. This is shown in page 300 and states the following “It didn’t matter. All that mattered was getting Julie to a safe place. If he succeeded at that, he could die knowing he’d done one thing right and that would be enough”. This means that Alex really cares about Julie and would die to have her be in a safe place.

I like this book because of how interesting and suspenseful it is. But sometimes there would be parts of the book that where Alex rambles about his past life and how life would have been with out the moon getting hit out of its orbit which is interesting but not suspenseful. I would recommend this book to people because of how interesting the story is and the events that go down. Overall, the theme of the book is to be grateful for what you have because it might eventually go away sooner than you think

Quarter one reflection

Quarter 1 has been a decent quarter (for me at least). I got a good amount of 3’s from my classes, but I did get some 2’s. Sometimes I would get a foul for missing assignments, but it wasn’t as often as I did from last year. To be successful the next quarter, I’ll try to get more 3’s and possibly a four. Outside of class, I didnt join any clubs like robotics, we to me, and especially sports because I’m no where near the level of athletic. I don’t really plan on joining any clubs in the next few quarters because I really want to focus on the academics, especially math.

Outsiders real comparison

                             Outsiders and real life connections

The poem We Real Cool and The Outsiders both have a good connection to each other in many ways such as characters and other similarities. One connection between both of these is how both have people that have dropped out of school like Darry, Soda, and other people from the gang. The quote in the poem that proves this connection is stated in line 1 - 2 and states the following “We left school”. This quote shows that people from the poem have dropped out of school just like some of the people from the Outsiders. Another connection between both of these is how both of these also have people that go out (late) at night such as Ponyboy when he was going back home from the movie theater. A quote from the poem that proves the connection between these is stated in line 2 - 3 and states the following “We Lurk late”. This quote proves that both the poem and the book have a connection. To sum it up, both the poem We Real Cool and the book The Outsiders have a connection in the characters and other similarities.

Outsiders book/movie comparison

                   The Outisiders movie/book comparison

The Outsiders book and movie are both very similar and very different. Some similarities that both of  these have are the things that are said. One sad but notable thing was when Johnny died and said “stay gold, Ponyboy”. This is in the book and is stated in page 148 and states the following “stay gold, Ponyboy”. Another similar thing that was said in both the movie and the book was when cherry said “things are rough all over”. This is stated in the book on page 35 with cherry stating the following “Things are rough all over”. The last similarity between the movie and the book is when Johnny stabbed Bob. This is stated in page 56 and states the following “I killed him, he said slowly. I killed that boy.” This quote means that Johnny had killed Bob with the same thing happening in the movie.

Although the book and the movie may have some similarities, there are still some big and small differences. One of the main differences was how the movie started out. In the movie, it would have Johnny, Dally, and Pony driving around and going to the lot. While in the book, it has Pony going back home from the movie theater and then getting jumped by the socs. This is proven in page 5 and states the following “They had me down in a second. They had my arms and legs pinned down and one of them was sitting on my chest with his knees on my elbows, and if you don't think that hurts, you're crazy”. This quote means that Pony gets jumped and is different from the beginning of the movie. Another difference between the movie and the book is how much they focus on certain characters. In the book, Darry and soda are the two main people that are spoken of, while in the movie, Dally and Johnny are characters that are mainly shown throughout the movie. The last difference between the movie and the book is how in depth the book was with the past and with the information of the characters.

In all, both the movie and the book were very good. The director of the movie added the things from the book like the poem Nothing Gold can Stay, the rumble, specific lines/sentences, and more. The actors of the movie also did a great job being like the actual character from the book. For example, the actor of soda two bit did a great job being like the two bit from the book because of his sense of humor.

Quote that means a lot to me

Why do people measure life by the years     instead of how good the years were?“ - Gabriel Iglesias (Fluffy).

This quote has a lot of meaning to me because this is regularly how people think of life, but in this cases, it’s thought differently. Life is regularly thought of how many years are lived, but this changes how some people (like me) now think of life differently. The quote might also make people rethink the way they love their lives by enjoying it and being able to remember the things they do. Lastly, the quote can inspire people to do good things so I’m the future they would remember what they did and (hopefully) be happy about it. So in all, this quote shows a lot of meaning to me and other people.
